Games that are able to be played in a group, while several of the game members are remote from the other. Some of these games have built-in chat systems, but the intent is generally that the group would have a video chat (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.) open on the side to communicate while playing the game. Items listed here are free unless otherwise noted. To be included in this list, the game must be able to support 3 or more players (we’re focusing on group games, not paired-up play-by-post games).
netgames.io - Social games for your phone
Designed specifically to be friendly on mobile devices. Can be used to play games while physically present with other players, without needing other physical props to play. For example, when your device is held upright, it shows your personal cards. But if you lay your device flat (e.g. on the table, screen up), the app automatically blanks (so your opponents cannot see your cards in hand) until you pick it back up again.
PlayingCards.io Virtual Tabletop
An interface to play any game that uses cards (plus optional accessories like tokens and chips). “rooms” created with this interface can be imported/exported, in a format labeled PCIO, so there are many community-created implementations of different popular games (example community forum).
Play board games online from your browser
Paid software package (needs to be installed on a desktop device; no mobile or chromeOS), but once paid (one-time, per player), offers a rich 3D tabletop to play on, with many community-created implementations of different games.
Paid software series (needs to be installed on a desktop device; no mobile or chromeOS) that focus on group games. Only one player needs to purchase the game, and then they can share their screen where the game interface is played. Nearly all these games can be played with a huge number of participants; most games have a set number of “main players”, but then more players can always join and be part of the “audience” who still votes and influences gameplay.
Zoom as a video platform specifically now has “Apps” that interact with the video participants. There are several that are classified as Games in their marketplace that can entertain participants, if you’re using that specific video platform with your participants
